My life and my passing… I’ve lived through much toil. I Have shed blood for the sake of blood itself and have had my own blood shed for the same reason. The bloody madness of this world! But I’ve found a light in the darkness. Something I can’t give away with just words. My son knows this gift I’ve been given. He feels it when I look at him and smile. When I instruct him to spread his hands to the sky and say I believe in u my Maker, thank u! U don’t need to be called Ahmad or Umar to have an honorable Islamic name. “Redfeather?” U ask…”this is no Muslim name it’s Sioux!”… I see and know what u don’t. Warriors before Allah or Gitchimanidoo have no clans or nations that raise them In status before him. All belong to the owner of all… the knower of all the languages and secrets to every heart in the world! The meaning of my name is sacred to me. It’s put fire in my blood… and I pray before I die and go back to my rabb…(my cherisher) to pass it on to my only son… that u must strive to be a master of ur own soul… to refuse being ruled spiritually by others who themselves are weak and unguided. The Creator alone turn ur faces to for inspiration…. reject all else if it crosses that fundamental truth. Red feather! Symbol of elated elevation soaked in the blood of that which had to be killed spiritually… weakness of will, doubt of self worth and ability, and acceptance of the judgements, opinions, and views of fellow fallible mortal men and women who know little to nothing of their own worth but who want to write urs for u in stone!… yaa Allah, I care for little else… answer this one request from me… let me pass this on and then take me when u will… Ameen

I am a walking contradiction of traditions some say. An African American and Native American Muslim poet with a personal life history as violently turbulent as a Storm. A visionary from the bottom of life’s social barrel striving to share the hope found in the light of faith through sometimes dark but real poetry. I’m a former member of the Bloods street gang, former serial bank robber, and both federal/state prison convict. I live on my mother’s tribal reservation of the Leech Lake band of Ojibwe in Minnesota.
