There is a statement I know, which is said to be of the treasures of paradise. Like many other Muslims I’ve said it out of habit without really benefiting from the vast knowledge which comes from the understanding of it’s meaning. The saying in Arabic is laa hawla was laa quwwata illa billah… Which I can with God’s help explain according to my own comprehension. It means, The there is no ability or power except by God. The word hawl is deep. From what I know the word has the connotion of movement. Ur ability to execute the direction of ur will towards anything good or bad. Ur ability to move. Eat, drink, sleep, rise, work, play, walk, run, jump, laugh, cry, etc etc etc is only possible because it, like everything else is but a created gift from the creator who gave us this ability. By his permission alone are we allowed to do what we choose to do here either good or bad. If u say u believe in the Creator, then u must believe that even our own metaphysical concepts of him and all things spiritual as conceived or perceived by a created mind are themselves created as well. They are not him, who is above his creation in a manner we’re not created to ever completely understand with our limited and fallible intellects. Ability and power do not belong to us… They are his alone. He bestows both upon whom he wills for whatever purpose he chooses. They are taken as easily as well as they are given, for He is Al Qadeer… A name he titles himself with in the Quran which means The complety Able. Nothing he wills to do cannot be kept from being done. Everything u will to do has to allowed before it can even be brought into action. Reflect upon this…

I am a walking contradiction of traditions some say. An African American and Native American Muslim poet with a personal life history as violently turbulent as a Storm. A visionary from the bottom of life’s social barrel striving to share the hope found in the light of faith through sometimes dark but real poetry. I’m a former member of the Bloods street gang, former serial bank robber, and both federal/state prison convict. I live on my mother’s tribal reservation of the Leech Lake band of Ojibwe in Minnesota.
