Red Feather

I lit my fire for those in the heavens to see. Miswka miigwaan… Redfeather!… This symbol is the meaning of what I believe is the course of my life and my ultimate destiny. The feather all over the world especially in Indian country regardless of tribe symbolizes freedom and spiritual elevation. A symbol of connection with the highest of high. Birds are noble creatures of the skies. High above the pettiness of the world. Red is the color of blood, which symbolizes sacrifice. I pay the highest price for my freedom. Putting the knife to my own ego so that I too may soar…

I am a walking contradiction of traditions some say. An African American and Native American Muslim poet with a personal life history as violently turbulent as a Storm. A visionary from the bottom of life’s social barrel striving to share the hope found in the light of faith through sometimes dark but real poetry. I’m a former member of the Bloods street gang, former serial bank robber, and both federal/state prison convict. I live on my mother’s tribal reservation of the Leech Lake band of Ojibwe in Minnesota.
