Miracles… I remember lighting up my first cigarette… 15 yrs old trying to look like a seasoned trouble maker lol… First pull made me gag and cough up… I kept at it though.. And thus started a smelly nicotine adventure that’s lasted 20 something years. I quit April 23rd… The night before the beginning of my holy month ramadan. I prayed hard to be delivered… I woke up next morning.. Washed up prayed after my morning meal and began my fast for Allah having no real craving for a smoke… And the days continue the same way.. Thank u my maker…in ur remembrance I did it…I’m cigarette free!

I am a walking contradiction of traditions some say. An African American and Native American Muslim poet with a personal life history as violently turbulent as a Storm. A visionary from the bottom of life’s social barrel striving to share the hope found in the light of faith through sometimes dark but real poetry. I’m a former member of the Bloods street gang, former serial bank robber, and both federal/state prison convict. I live on my mother’s tribal reservation of the Leech Lake band of Ojibwe in Minnesota.
